Navigating EU data protection: nasscom workshop for Indian digital companies

The goal of the workshop was to familiarise Indian companies with the requirements of the GDPR and to prepare them for smooth business activities with European partners, with a focus on Germany. In addition, specific compliance issues were discussed from the perspective of Indian companies that are already or will be active in the EU. The workshop, attended by representatives from around 15 Indian digital companies, was opened with introductory remarks by the BMDV and nasscom.

Marc Lendermann highlighted the importance of GDPR implementation for the successful processing of businesses in the EU market. He further recommended the Indo-German Digital Dialogue as a valuable forum to strengthen Indo-German partnerships in the digital sector. He  encouraged the participating companies to engage with the dialogue and jointly advance the sector in a targeted and strategic manner.
Shivendra Singh, Vice President and Head of Global Trade Development at nasscom, emphasised the importance of exchange formats such as this one for strengthening the digital economy in both countries.  

Fabian Jendrejewski, data protection expert for Bitkom Consult, the advisory section of the German software association Bitkom, delivered the presentation on GDPR compliance for Indian companies. In his presentation, he outlined the central legal principles of the GDPR and went into more detail on topics such as risk management and sanction regulations. Best practice principles for implementing the GDPR in the operational business processes of companies were presented in a practical way.  

The delegation members pointed to the importance of acquiring in-depth knowledge, also at a more abstract level, to be able to make valid and reliable assessments of market entry opportunities. The workshop laid the foundation for more exchanges and collaborations between the Indian-German partners.
